Smoothie Tuesday! Apricot carrot smoothie

apricot smoothie 012

It has been really hot here in Washington this past week! It seems hotter than the typical July here at least. We have been eating a ton of coconut water popsicles and drinking smoothies to stay cool. Here is an idea- you can pour your smoothie in a Popsicle  mold and make smoothie popsicles! We just received a big box of apricots from my father in law so I am trying to figure out what to do with them all!

Smoothie Tuesday! Blueberry lavender rose smoothie

berry rose smoothie 020

This is a great way to feel calm and cool in this hot summer heat! I notice our family tends to get more irritable in the summer heat so this is the perfect cure for that! Lavender and roses are naturally calming flowers when their scent is inhaled or they are ingested. I used rose petals for this but you can also use about a teaspoon of rose water also.

Blueberry lavender rose smoothie:

1/2 cup blueberries
1 large apple
2 tablespoons cashew butter

Island breeze smoothie

island breeze 015

I don’t know about you but I LOVE Hawaii.  Almost everything about it makes me happy: the food, the weather, the beaches, the sunsets, and the wildlife. So of course I have many recipes that are very ” island” inspired including this smoothie! So turn on your favorite island music sit back in the sun and sip an an island breeze. That is what I am doing on this 4th of July anyways! I’m sure a little rum added wouldn’t be horrible either! Cheers!

Island breeze smoothie:
1/2 pineapple
1 apple
juice of 1 lime
3 cups coconut milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons shredded coconut
1/2 avocado

Smoothie Tuesday! Blood enriching berry smoothie

blood build smoothie and video of kids 005

It is important to keep a healthy level of minerals in your blood to keep your body strong and to prevent many health issues. Chinese medicine puts great importance on preventing and treating blood deficiency. It can lead to fatigue, heart palpitations, brain fog, anxiety, weak muscles and more. Meat broths, organ meats, and seafood are great for blood building. If you are vegan then black colored foods such as black beans, black sesame seeds, dark leafy greens, spirulina  and molasses are also great for building blood.

Blood enriching berry smoothie:

4 kale leaves
2 1/2 cups mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries)
3 tablespoons ground black sesame seeds
3 tablespoons hemp protein powder
1-2 teaspoons blackstrap molasses
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon cocoa powder
1 packet stevia
2 cups water

Bee energized smoothie!

bracelets kale and bee smoothie 024

bracelets kale and bee smoothie 023

Here is my other smoothie that I have been meaning to post! I have been loving bee products and supplements lately!  Bee products such as raw honey, bee pollen, propolis, and royal jelly have been use for centuries for endurance, anti inflammatory effects, and anti-bacterial and anti aging to name a few. But if you are allergic to bee stings you may be sensitive to other bee products as well so be careful and take it slow if you are unsure.

Bee energized smoothie:

2 oranges peeled (I put some of the peel in for digestive support)
1 apple
large handful of leafy greens
1/2 avocado
1 carrot
2 tablespoons ground chia seeds
1-2 teaspoons turmeric powder
1 tablespoon raw honey (enriched with bee pollen, royal jelly, and propolis)
1 tablespoon bee pollen
1 tablespoon cocoa powder
10 drops vanilla stevia

Smoothie Tuesday! Strawberry nectarine kiwi smoothie

summer2014 and house 012

Hi there! Sorry for the crickets chirping on the page lately! My dad has been in and and out of the hospital this last month with liver/kidney issues due to cirrhosis. So I have been busy helping out my mom and visiting him up in Seattle the last month or so. In the mean time my dog has been retaliating with my being gone more with discovering how to break out of her kennel and destroying  just about everything-cars, door frames, blinds at our house and my parents house.

I actually have a few smoothies that are waiting to be posted that I haven’t had time to post. This one is from a few weeks ago. I have an energizing smoothie that I am going to post tomorrow that includes bee products such as pollen, royal jelly and raw honey. That one was added to my facebook page but never made it to this page. So check out my facebook page also! This has been a busy year for me so far! We are preparing to start treating patients in the teaching clinic at my school this fall. The school has added patented chinese herbal formulas to my program, so I am excited to be able to learn about 100 patented formulas and dispense them to patients!

Smoothie Tuesday! Blackberry mocha shake

soup and blackmocha smooth 020

Happy Tuesday! I really enjoyed this smoothie today! I try to avoid caffeine on a regular basis but once in a while I will take a little energy boost to motivate myself to be more productive. I have been trying bee pollen this week to see if I notice any effect and so far its hard to tell. I have been able to sleep better at night but I have been getting a ton of sunshine in the past few days too so it may also be the  fabulous benefits of the highly elusive sunshine (in Western Washington at least).

I have started taking a zumba class at the gym which is totally out of my comfort zone. I think if something is out of your comfort zone then it probably means you need to do it!  How else do you grow as a person?  I have never been someone who feels comfortable dancing so I am excited to try some right brain exercise instead of just hitting the machines or the track!

Blackberry mocha shake

1/2 cup walnuts
1/2 cup blackberries
1/4 cup chopped mango
1 apple
2 large handfuls of leafy greens
1-2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 teaspoon ground coffee
3 cups water
1 tablespoon bee pollen (optional)
1 tablespoon hemp protein powder (optional)
5-10 drops stevia (optional)

Vitamin C Blaster smoothie! Tips for preventing and fighting colds!

vitamin C smoothie 009

To prevent those spring colds you should increase your intake of vitamin C! Also foods high in zinc like seafood/ seaweed can be a great immunity stimulant!  Avoiding dairy, grains and sugar is also important too for preventing mucous build up that can trigger an impending virus from taking hold. When I know I am on the verge of getting a cold what usually does me in is eating something sugary like a piece of chocolate (this just happened this week).Fortunately I can usually get rid of a cold in 2 days if I really rest and watch my diet.

Hot soups and hot teas are great keeping the phlegm at bay. Especially if you can add ginger, turmeric, and other spices to help clear out the lungs/sinuses. It is also helpful if you can try to do some light exercise to sweat out the pathogen and increase your immunity when you are starting  to get sick.

Vitamin C blaster smoothie:

20 strawberries
2 peeled mandarin oranges
1 lemon with peel
1 grapefruit peeled
juice of 1-2 limes
handful of cherry tomatoes
2-3″ fresh ginger
1/2-1 teaspoon of turmeric powder (or small chunk of fresh)
1-2 packets of stevia (optional)
3 cups water

*Make sure you drink this smoothie at room temperature if you want to prevent and fight a cold! Eating/drinking too many cold foods can increase your mucous! Even better would be to have a cup of tea or soup with your smoothie!

* Cheers to good health!

Smoothie Tuesday! Orange turmeric creamsicle smoothie

creamcicle 008

Hi there! My site has been a little quiet for a few weeks mostly because I haven’t had any recipe inspirations since I am trying to avoid sweeteners (even natural) and even too much fruit. But I do have some savory and raw recipes in mind that I will try to post soon. I guess you could say anti candida is what I am working on- or avoiding “dampening” foods as they would say in chinese medicine. I will continue with my smoothie Tuesdays but will use minimal sweeteners and lower sugar fruits. This smoothie is very thick so you could eat it with a spoon and call it pudding if you want! Or you can just add a little extra water if you like it thinner. Hope you are having a great spring and feeling healthy!

Orange turmeric creamsicle smoothie:

1 orange with peel
1 orange without peel
1/2 cup mango chunks
1/2 large avocado
1/2 can full fat coconut milk
20-30 drops vanilla stevia
2-3″ chunk fresh turmeric root

* Makes 2 small smoothies or 1 extra large

Smoothie Tuesday! Lemon mango smoothie

lemon mango 030

Well my week fasting was a bust! I had a last minute road trip across a few states over to southern Idaho for a funeral. There was no way I was going to be able to do a fast in a car for 12 hours a day in a car with several other people. I was glad I was able to make my grandfather in law’s funeral because it was truly inspiring to hear about such a loved and positive man and learn about his life story. He was one of the few small farmers that actually made a good living out of only farming. It is amazing to see the effect one person can have on so many people.

Driving through Montana and Idaho was gorgeous and always makes my husband and I consider moving to a smaller mountain town. I think as of now we are thinking Bend Oregon might be the place to raise our family. But we also haven’t really been there (I have only driven through it) so we will scope it out in a few weeks when we are down in Oregon visiting my sister in law. It seems like the perfect compromise- more sunshine for me and more snow for my husband:)

I have decided to discontinue my “Vegan Mondays Round Up” because I think it doesn’t really work on smaller blogs like mine. I Just don’t have enough bloggers posting their links. I will continue with it in the future if my page picks up with a larger audience. Thanks to Gluten Free Cat , Bite Sized Thoughts, and Sift ,Stir and Savour for supporting the round up!

Lemon mango smoothie:

1/2 lemon with peel
2 ” ginger
1 cup mango (frozen or fresh)
1/2 avocado
3 stalks celery
1/2 cucumber
1 cup coconut milk
2 cups water
10 drops vanilla stevia
large chunk pineapple
2 tablespoons spirulina powder

* To make the layers just leave out the spirulina powder (or something green and leafy) and save half of the yellow smoothie before you add the green to the other half. Then gently layer using a spoon.
