Smoothie Tuesday! New Years cleansing smoothie and health tips!

Happy New Year! Here is a great way to start off the new year! Time to cleanse out all of those holiday goodies and excess winter weight. Another perfect addition to cleansing smoothies and juices is to add probiotics like sauerkraut , kefir, or kombucha to your daily diet. Flaxseeds and chia seeds are also awesome foods to keep your digestion moving and inflammation levels down. Just be sure to drink extra water to help the extra bulk keep flowing through your system!

Something that I do especially in the dry winter months to give me energy, decrease inflammation, help digestion and build my yin levels (the watery fluids in your body needed to be healthy) is to mix some nonfat yogurt or kefir with equal amounts fresh ground flaxseeds(or flax oil) and add a pinch of turmeric and spirulina. This is based on the Budwig diet and is also used to fight cancer and other degenerative diseases so it can not only fight them it can also help prevent them as well. It supposedly is a magical combination of a nonfat sulphur protein (yogurt/kefir/quark) and flax oil . I don’t normally eat dairy because of the effects on my skin and overall health but this is the exception to that rule because I only take it in very small amounts (1/4 cup per day) and I feel really great when I eat it. I can literally feel all the cells in body thanking me and giving me the energy that I need – similar to that first few sips of coffee;)

Below I listed some of the benefits of the ingredients of my New Years cleansing smoothie:

  • Grapefruits-High in vitamin C, bioflavanoids, and potassium. Are an antiseptic, fever reducer, and helpful for fatigue. Grapefruits contain quinine which has a long history of being used as a treatment for Malaria, as well as arthritis and leg cramps.
  • Grapes-Resveratrol  a flavanoid  in red and purple grapes reduce the body’s ability to store fat by about 130%. It also lowers blood pressure by improving the dilation of blood vessels. Resveretrol protects against brain damaging free radicals to improve brain health. Grapes are anti inflammatory and lower blood sugar in the body.
  • Cilantro-Powerful cleansing herb which cleanses toxins and heavy metals from the body. Cilantro is also anti inflammatory and promotes healthy liver function.
  • Apples-Protects against cancer, alzheimers, parkinsons disease, lowers cholesterol, prevents gallstones by preventing the build up of cholesterol in the body. The fiber in apples help detox the liver by keeping the digestive system moving so toxins are flushed out of the body.
  • Celery-Potent anti inflammatory especially of the digestive tract, protects against damaging effects caused by eating fried foods, lowers blood pressure by relaxing the smooth muscles surrounding the vessels allowing them to expand.
  • Ginger- Strong anti inflammatory effects, gastrointestinal relief/digestive aid, helps with nausea, protects against colorectal cancer by inhibiting growth of cancer cells. Ginger kills ovarian cancer cells by apoptosis (programmed cell death) and autophagocytosis (self digestion). Ginger promotes sweating which is good for fighting a cold or fever.

New Year cleansing smoothie:

1 grapefruit peeled

1 apple

1 1/2 cups grapes

1 large stalk celery

1-2″ chunk fresh ginger

handful fresh cilantro

about 3 cups filtered water

*Cheers to good health!*

What I ate Wednesday and detox update after 1 week raw

chiahemp (70)

I have been on almost all (90-95%) raw for the past week and all I can say is WOW! I feel amazing!  I really feel more connected to the natural environment/universe. As cheesy as that sounds it really is true. It’s like I’m living on a new level. I feel way more relaxed and happy than I normally do and I don’t get as irritated when my kids are being naughty (most of the day). Although I have started getting some detox symptoms last night. I had a really bad headache/nausea that started last night and then I woke up with one (this has never happened). The rare migraine headache I usually get is always gone by morning. Then I took a little turmeric powder mixed with honey and about 30 minutes later it was gone! Normally when I have a migraine they NEVER go away that quickly! It’s always a long drawn out process that usually requires Tylenol and a nap. I’m going to have to try the turmeric remedy next time I have a non detox headache to see if it will take it away that easily.

For breakfast I had a bowl of chia breakfast pudding and for lunch I had this  protein smoothie that I had yesterday with a kiwi fruit added to it. I intended on having the smoothie for a snack but it ended up keeping me full until dinner. Also when I say I had a smoothie it means I had about 2 or 3 large cups of that smoothie! One of these day I will learn portion control!

For dinner I made the same greek salad I have been making almost every day for the past week or so except with cranberries instead of raisins and hemp seeds on top. I think I am about greeked out! Maybe its time to move onto some new salads! For desert I made a cherry chocolate banana split.  I LOVE making ice cream using mostly just bananas! It is really hard to find an ice cream dish that isn’t loaded in some kind of fat! And you know how I feel about sugar and fat combined! (gall bladder enemies!) I used carob on top instead of chocolate tonight because it’s late and my kids need to actually sleep tonight.

Cherry chocolate banana split (vegan)

3 frozen bananas

10 drops stevia(optional)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

handful of de-seeded cherries

handful of raw cacoa nibs or chocolate chips (crushed)

Carob sauce:

2 tablespoons of raw carob powder

2 tablespoons fresh orange juice

1/2 tablespoon nut milk

1/2 tablespoon sun butter or almond butter

5 drops of stevia (or 1/2 tablespoon raw honey/maple)

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon spirulina powder

pinch of cinnamon

pinch of sea salt

* Blend/process all the ingredients in the blender-you can add 1-2 tablespoons of nut milk to help it process easier but if you overdo it your ice cream will turn into a smoothie!

* Top with sliced cherries, chopped pecans/walnuts, cacao nibs or chocolate chips(crushed) Makes 2 servings.

What I ate Wednesday

photo (5)

For breakfast today I didn’t eat food but just had some fresh juice from my juicer. Sometimes I just feel better if I skip breakfast and do an early lunch. It gives my body a sort of mini detox considering it has been without food since dinner yesterday. Just a large cup( or 3) of juice and I’m good till lunch. I even have a better workout on an empty stomach.  The secret to making juice more affordable is to dilute it with water and add a little bit of stevia sweetener to extend it out. Then you can drink several cups throughout the day instead of just 1 concentrated cup in the morning. This is my juice today:

Lime sunshine

5 carrots

1 gala apple

1 lime

1/2 orange

2-3 ” piece of fresh ginger

handful of cilantro

2 stalks of celery

1/2 cucumber

Enjoy!  It tastes even better in a fancy cup 🙂
